Professional Indemnity Insurance

Professional indemnity is the cover for the work you're paid to think about — advice, designs, services — when a client says it caused them a loss. For many professions it's a condition of registration or the contract, and it pays not just a claim but the cost of defending one, which is often the larger number.

What professional indemnity insurance covers

Claims your work caused a loss

For allegations of negligence, error or omission in your advice, design or service that left a client financially worse off.

Defence costs

The cost of defending a claim, even one that's ultimately unfounded — frequently the bigger expense, and covered from the start.

The limit your obligations require

Registration bodies and contracts set minimums. We place a limit that meets them and reflects the size of the clients you work with.

Cover, limits and examples shown are general in nature and subject to eligibility, underwriting and the terms of the issued policy.

What does professional indemnity insurance cover?
It covers claims that your professional advice, design or service caused a client financial loss — through negligence, an error or an omission — including the cost of defending the claim. It's the core cover for anyone whose work is their advice or expertise.
Who needs professional indemnity insurance?
Consultants, designers, advisers, IT and finance professionals, real estate agents and many others — and for some (like tax agents, financial advisers and real estate agents) it's a registration or licensing requirement. If a client relies on your work, you likely need it.
Is professional indemnity the same as public liability?
No — public liability covers physical injury and property damage, professional indemnity covers financial loss from your advice or service. Many businesses need both. We make sure the two work together rather than leave a gap between them.
