A few things before you start — they protect your claim and can make all the difference to the outcome.
- Make things safe first, and do what's reasonable to prevent further loss (board up, stop the leak, secure the site) — keep the receipts.
- Don't dispose of or repair damaged property until the insurer approves, beyond emergency or temporary repairs.
- Theft or malicious damage must be reported to police — have the report or event number handy.
- Have your policy number, photos of the damage, repair quotes and receipts ready to attach.
