Insurance Strategy for Growing Businesses
Once the basics are in place, the cover that protects a growing business is in the details most people never read: indemnity periods, aggregate limits and the liability you sign up for in your contracts.
Business interruption and the indemnity period
Business interruption cover replaces the income you lose while you recover from an insured event. Its most important setting is the indemnity period, the maximum length of time the policy will keep paying.
Many businesses default to twelve months without thinking it through. But if rebuilding premises, replacing specialist equipment or winning back customers would take longer than that, the cover runs out before the recovery does. For a lot of businesses, eighteen or twenty-four months is closer to reality.
Aggregate limits versus per-claim limits
A liability limit can apply per claim, or in the aggregate across the whole policy year. The difference matters: an aggregate limit can be eroded by earlier claims, leaving less, or nothing, for a later one.
As a business takes on more work, more sites and more staff, the chance of multiple claims in a year rises, and limits that looked generous can turn out to be thin.
The liability you sign up for in contracts
Bigger contracts come with bigger obligations. Hold-harmless and indemnity clauses can shift a client’s risk onto you, and principals increasingly require specific limits and “interested party” or waiver-of-subrogation wordings.
Signing those clauses without checking that your policy responds to them is a common and serious trap. A contract can create a liability your insurance was never designed to cover.
Cover should grow with the work
The cover that suited a two-person operation will not suit the same business with a team, a warehouse and national clients. New activities, higher turnover and larger contracts all change the risk, and the cover should change with them.
The practical answer is a proper review whenever the business takes a step up, not just at renewal. That is where a broker earns their keep as you scale.
